Ithaca or Bust

There are plenty of small miracles. The day that I got home from Geneva after my Dad's passing I had an audition for The Kitchen Theatre Company. The audition was for the role of Eugene in Yellowman, a Pulitzer Prize finalist by Dael Orlandersmith. This is a play that I've wanted to do for quite some time. It's a two-actor play where both actors play many characters, and it deals with the internal racism between light and dark skinned Blacks. I got the part, and cannot wait to start.

My friends Inga Ballard and Deidre N. Henry have both played the role of Alma in Yellowman and have warned me that it is a life changing experience.

When I told my Mother that I was auditioning she wished me luck, and then when I told her that the theatre was only an hour away from home, she wished me luck and grinned. She was trying very hard to hide her excitement. When I got the offer, she let me know how happy she really was.

I'm looking forward to returning upstate, having the opportunity to do this show, experiencing the saying "Ithaca is Gorges," and spend some time with Mom. Yellowman runs from April 26th through May 13th. The Kitchen's mainstage is a seventy seat jewel box theatre.
